8pm - The Allingham Lecture: Eamonn Mc Cann “Power and the People”
Eamonn Mc Cann, well-known Derry politician, activist, writer, broadcaster and environmentalist delivers this year’s Allingham Lecture. Mc Cann has been campaigning for social justice for over 40 years. A lifelong socialist and trades unionist, he is a member of the National Executive of the NUJ and of the Northern Ireland Committee of the ICTU. He was instrumental in setting up the Bloody Sunday Justice Campaign.
He has campaigned against militarism and war since the days of CND and the Vietnam protests, and was among those who successfully took non-violent direct action against the bomb-makers Raytheon. He is chairman of the Bloody Sunday Trust and a member of Amnesty International and of the Rail lobby, Into the West. He is also a member of the Zero Waste Derry environmental group, set up to raise awareness of environmental issues in the Derry area, and which supports individuals from both sides of the border in their struggle against environmentally threatening council and corporate decisions.
